A family of hitches based on the §clove hitch. They are ideal for attaching a rope to a spar or another rope in such a way that it will not shift or slip under load. However, when unloaded, they are easy to move along the spar.
There are three, named in §ABoK as Rolling Hitch (1), Rolling Hitch (2) and the Magnus hitch. These may not hold in modern synthetic ropes, and can be replaced by the more recently introduced §icicle hitch.
All of these are strongly directional and will slip if loaded in the wrong direction. However, they can be made secure in all directions by finishing with a half-hitch around the standing end.
Rolling hitch (1) is simply a §clove hitch with an extra initial turn. This is supposed to be better for tying to a fixed post. Prone to jamming
Rolling hitch (2) is a clove hitch with an extra initial turn, but this turn is nestled between the first turn and the standing end. When tied on another rope this becomes a §Midshipman's hitch. It is perhaps the most secure.
A Magnus hitch is simply a §cow hitch with an extra turn. This is harder to snug up but does not roll under load and does not jam as easily.
