icicle hitch

Tags :: §hitches

The icicle hitch is very similar to the §magnus hitch, except that it has two more turns and the final half-hitch goes underneath the standing end.

An icicle hitch is tied exactly as a Magnus hitch, except it typically starts with four turns or more, and the final half-hitch additionally wraps over and under the standing end. This is then loaded in the opposite way to the other rolling hitches.

It is significantly better at gripping than the Magnus hitch, particularly in synthetic rope. Its name indicates that it can grip even when tied around a tapered spar (like an icicle).
