There are several closely related hitches for attaching a rope to a post, with different degrees of security.
- §cow hitch
- easiest on a bight when both ends are free.
- §clove hitch
- most rudimentary hitch around a vertical pole. Must remain loaded on both ends.
- §constrictor knot
- modification of the §clove hitch, prone to §jamming
- §rolling hitches
- more secure than the clove hitch, non-slip.
- §icicle hitch
- superlative non-slip method esp. for synthetic ropes
