cow hitch

Tags :: §hitches

A foundational hitch, ideal for easily capturing something in the bight of a rope when both ends are free.

Commonly used for the ends of lanyards and item tags.

A cow-hitch around another rope is topologically equivalent to a §square knot.

The lark's head is a free-standing cow-hitch. It can be formed in a bight by grabbing the rope with two hands, and making a turn in each hand towards the other. This can then be dropped over an open spar and pulled to tighten. There is a symmetry here with the §clove hitch, which can be tied in a similar manner.
