Palm and needle whipping is called "the best of all" by §Ashley. It is named after the tools needed to create it: it is stitched with a needle, and the needle is pushed through the rope with a palm, which is a wooden or hard leather hand-cover.
There are two versions, a short version (ABoK #3446) and a long version (ABoK #3447). There is a version which does not use a palm and needle shown as ABoK #3448.
