The overhand knot is the simplest knot of all.

Its name possibly comes from the fact that in a large rope it is very easily tied over the hand:

• drape the rope over your hand.
• call the end over your palm the "working end" and the other the "standing end".
• pull the working end around the standing end on the wrist-side
• grab the working end in your fingers.
• pull the working end and roll the rope off your hand

This method also works well with fingers in smaller rope.
