A load-rating is a number given by a manufacturer for a given product stating its maximum and safe working loads (MWL, SWL).
The MWL is obviously the load at which that equipment is liable to break. The SWL is usually a factor of the MWL, and depends on use-case. For human-bearing equipment, MWL is often 5x or 10x the SWL (this is known as the safety factor).
If equipment in good condition fails at significantly below a marked MWL or SWL, the manufacturer may be liable for this.
